Google Android TV users have reported installing apps on their TV using their phones thanks to a new Play Store function.
The feature was first spotted by a Reddit user on Sunday. According to the user, they were able to download an app to their Android TV using a new install option in the Google Play Store. The new install button appears when browsing an app’s store page on an Android device connected to the same account, one running Android TV OS.
The ability to install apps remotely isn’t exactly new for Google. The company has offered similar options on the Play Store on desktop, as well as on mobile devices when installing apps for Wear OS devices.
Having it on your smartphone will be convenient, though, as most of us usually have our phones with us when watching TV or sitting in the living room. Also, being able to install apps to your Android TV device will also end much of the headache that comes with using voice controls or having to find the app on Google TV.
It looks like the feature isn’t available on many devices just yet. Comments on the original Reddit thread report that it isn’t appearing for them yet, and I was unable to get it to pop up on my Pixel 4a 5G when I tested it on Monday.
We’ve reached out to Google for more information on an official rollout but have not yet received a response.
