Some Samsung Galaxy devices are getting a significant Android security update that fixes 40 vulnerabilities.
According to SamMobile, this month’s update just started rolling out to Samsung users, but it primarily focuses on privacy and security rather than new features. In the monthly security bulletin published last week, Android details the updates and which vulnerabilities they address.
In particular, the update addresses a high-security vulnerability in the Media Framework component. Android said this vulnerability “could enable a local malicious application to bypass operating system protections that isolate application data from other applications.”
Android is encouraging users with a Samsung device to update their phone to the latest Android 11 to ensure that you’re protected from these vulnerabilities.
However, 9to5Google notes that only specific Samsung devices have started to get the option to update. These include the Galaxy S Series, the Galaxy Note series, Galaxy Fold devices, and Galaxy A series devices.
Android releases a monthly update to users that includes security and bug patches, as well as the occasional new feature or two. Right now, the updates affect Android 11, but users can look forward to major updates and new features once Android 12 is released this fall.
Android 12 will include a host of great security features for not only Galaxy devices, but all Android phones. These include a new privacy dashboard that will give you complete control over what information apps can access, what they can change, and more, as well as the addition of Android Private Compute Core (APCC).
The updates affect Android 11, but users can look forward to major updates and new features once Android 12 is released this fall.
Android said APCC is a system processing tool that allows more private interactions, since processing can be carried out on the device rather than putting information out on the network.
