Update: Google has stated that this version of Froyo firmware is not the official version for your phone. Therefore, this method of manual update is no longer valid.
Nexus one owner, in case you are still not aware, Google has released the latest version of Android 2.2 (Froyo) in the Google I/O Conference. Some of you lucky people should already have received the OTA update. For those who have not (like me), do not fret, here is how you can update it manually (without having to root or void your warranty).
Download the Android 2.2 official firmware here (The file has been removed).
Rename the file to update.zip.
Hook up your Nexus One to the computer and mount your SD card. Copy the update.zip to the root of your SD card.
Unmount your SD card and unhook the phone.
Important: If you are using any Home replacement app, disable or uninstall it. ( if not, you might not be able to access your phone after the update)
Switch off the phone. Press the Volume Down and the Power button concurrently to turn it on again. You should see a white screen with several options. Use the volume down button to scroll down to Recovery. Press the Power button to select.
You will see a Droid and an exclamation mark inside a triangle. Now press the Volume Up and Power button concurrently. If nothing happens, try again. It might take several tries to get to the next screen.
When you reached the next screen, you should see an option sdcard:update.zip. Using your trackball, scroll down to the sdcard:update.zip option and press the trackball to select it.
The phone will now update itself to the latest firmware. It might take some times. When it is done, it will boot up and viola…you are now the proud owner of Frozen Yogurt.
