Samsung is porting its web browser to the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic, allowing users to access websites previously unavailable.
The new update uses gestures to help solve the problem of how to browse the internet on a device so small. According to 9to5Google, a beginners’ guide appears when a web page first is opened, explaining how to browse on the smartwatch by swiping on the screen to move around.
Swiping up reveals a menu that displays bookmarks, a zoom mode for easier reading, and a feature that sends a web page to a connected smartphone. By syncing with a smartphone, users will see the bookmarks shared by the two devices, but only through the Samsung Internet Browser app.
It’s unknown at this time if this capability will extend to third-party browsers.
Despite the attempt to make browsing on the smartwatches easier, it may still prove difficult and cumbersome. According to SamMobile, the smartwatch browser loads the desktop version of most websites, which will make it difficult to browse through, especially on such a tiny display.
Samsung has yet to say if it intends to create a unique browsing experience on the Watch 4 or if users will have to rely on sending pages to their Galaxy phone for easier use.
Only two devices will have this update, with no mention of bringing the web browser to other smartwatches. The updated Internet Browser is currently available on the Google Play store.
