AMD has announced plans to bring RDNA 2 graphics technology to Samsung’s Exynos lineup of mobile system-on-chip (SoC) systems.
AMD and Samsung announced their latest partnership during Computex Taipei. According to The Verge, Samsung will reveal more information about the plans later in 2021. The goal is to bring RDNA 2, AMD’s current graphics microarchitecture, to Exynos chips in flagship Samsung devices sometime in the future.
“The next place you’ll find RDNA 2 will be the high-performance mobile phone market,” Lisa Su, AMD’s CEO, said on-stage at Computex Taipei. “AMD has partnered with industry leader Samsung for several years to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile market, and we’re happy to announce that we’ll bring custom graphics IP to Samsung’s next flagship mobile SoC with ray tracing and variable rate shading capabilities.”
RDNA 2 support in Exynos chips will enable support for more premium features like ray tracing and variable rate shading to mobile flagships in the Samsung lineup. While no timeline has been shared yet, it could mean the introduction of more powerful gaming and applications on new phones as early as the Samsung Galaxy S22.
Ray tracing has become a big feature in more recent game releases, as it allows for realistic lighting, reflections, and other visuals that help make games feel more immersive and realistic. However, many of the graphics cards that support it are expensive and hard to find in stock right now.
With AMD and Samsung working to bring ray tracing to mobile phones, it could mean more support for such features in games and other mobile experiences down the line.
