Qualcomm, best known for its Snapdragon processors, has announced its first smartphone—designed by Asus and carrying a $1,500 price tag.

Smartphone processor manufacturer Qualcomm has revealed the “Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders” (yes, really), its first attempt at releasing its own smartphone device. The new device has been designed by ASUS, which has partnered with Qualcomm in the past on both the ASUS ZenFone and ASUS ROG Phones.

With such a hefty price tag, the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders might only appeal to Snapdragon Insiders, an opt-in community of Qualcomm followers.

The Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders combines Asus hardware with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 5G mobile platform, intended to cater specifically to Snapdragon Insiders. According to Qualcomm, this “connectivity powerhouse” allows users to stay connected with global 5G, Wi-Fi 6/6E, and Bluetooth.

It also boasts high-end performance for gaming, using the Qualcomm Adreno 660 GPU, improved control responsiveness with Qualcomm Game Quick Touch, and fast/smooth streaming speeds.

Audio-wise, the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders uses Snapdragon Sound technology coupled with Master & Dynamic earbuds (included) to provide clear and immersive sound. It also boasts fully synchronized audio for gaming, high-resolution music streaming, and “virtually glitch-free” sound quality in most environments.

Qualcomm also states the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders offers professional-quality photography, utilizing three rear cameras with the Spectra 580 ISP for image processing. It uses AI to automatically track and zoom, can process 2.7 gigapixels per second, and can capture video at resolutions up to 8K.

Snapdragon Insiders will have the first opportunity to check out the new phone. While no specific dates have been announced yet, Qualcomm says it’s “coming soon to the US, China, UK, and Germany, with more regions in the works.”
