If you’re just looking for a no-frills case for your MacBook Pro and want to spend as little as possible on it, you might consider ProCase’s MacBook Pro 13 Case, which is available in a slew of colors. A slim, lightweight, rubberized shell makes for a simple design, though its protection can be characterized as superficial at best.

The poor quality of protection and lack of sophisticated design is reflected in the price. It’s not a great value, because while it is inexpensive, you get exactly what you pay for.

To test this case, we put it on a compatible 13-inch MacBook and spent days traveling with it to evaluate the level of protection it offers and how it holds up against wear and tear.

Design: Uncomplicated, but also impractical

Featuring a super-slim shell, this case is pleasantly light and won’t add weight to your load. The soft, rubberized coating has a smooth finish and offers a sleek style, but beyond that, it doesn’t provide tons of protection against superficial scratches and abrasions.

The rubber also attracts tons of dust, and the dust stands out against a dark color option like black, which is what we used in our testing. It also shows fingerprints and scratches after a few days of use.

The two-piece design snaps onto the top and slides onto the bottom of the laptop, with each piece offering its own precise cutouts for easy access to all ports. There are also two rows of ventilation on the bottom to help your MacBook stay cool. An issue we encountered was that the bottom piece didn’t fit snugly on the laptop — it kept slipping off or sliding out of place in transit. For a laptop cover, this is a major downside if not an outright dealbreaker.

One unique feature is the silicone keyboard cover, which is designed to protect your keys from beverage spills, dust, crumbs and more. We found that it didn’t fit perfectly on the keyboard, nor did it cover all of the keys. Perhaps it’s better than no keyboard protection at all, but if this is something you really care about then you’re probably better off buying a separate, higher-quality cover that fits more precisely.

Setup Process: Easy, but not a one-time deal

Once we unpackaged the ProCase covered, it required little setup. We snapped the upper piece onto the top of our laptop and slid the other half onto the bottom. Then we placed the silicone cover on the keyboard, and we were done.

The only caveat? Since the bottom piece tends to slip off, you may feel the need to keep fussing with it, only to realize that it won’t ever fully fasten on the bottom side of the laptop.

Price: Inexpensive, but you get what you pay for

This case retails for $16.99, which makes it very much a budget option. In a market where laptop cases vary in price by a considerable amount, it’s refreshing to find an option like ProCase’s MacBook Pro 13 Case that sells for such a reasonable price, even if it has some faults.

Its protection can be characterized as superficial at best.

Competition: Lots of budget options

When it comes to affordable laptop cases, there is actually an abundance of other options, not all of which we’ve tested.

The Se7enline Matte Plastic Hard Cover for this same model of MacBook ($22.99) offers an equally sleek design and provides useful extras like a screen protector, a keyboard cover, and dust plugs for the computer’s ports. The Fintie Protective Case ($18.99) offers more durability, and the Kasillo MacBook Pro Case ($11.99) is even less expensive.

All appear to offer the same main set of features, though you may find that the Fintie Protective Case is the greatest value — it fits better onto your MacBook and is made with more durable, high-quality materials.
