OnePlus officially has announced the new Nord 2 5G, the newest model in its Nord line of smartphones, which will leverage the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset.

Earlier today, OnePlus India officially teased the upcoming Nord 2 5G on its official Twitter account. According to OnePlus, the Nord 2 5G will use MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200 chipset in order to provide users with “AI-based features.”

These AI-focused enhancements are prompting OnePlus to refer to the chipset as the “MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI.”

OnePlus hasn’t revealed much about these AI-based features, but has stated that they will include AI-assisted imaging, display enhancements, and “better response times for faster and smoother gaming.” While it isn’t much to go on, OnePlus has stated that it plans to answer users’ questions about the processor and its new smartphone “very soon.”

According to Android Police, the AI-enhanced camera features should allow the Nord 2 to recognize scenes and adjust the image’s color and contrast on its own. It also will be able to automatically adjust video recordings to improve overall color accuracy and quality.

AI-based gaming improvements are a bit more vague, with speculation that the MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI will lead to lower latency, improved refresh rates, and better heat management and battery life. Until OnePlus reveals more specifics about the Nord 2 5G, general speculation is about all we have to go on.

Response to the announcement of the OnePlus Nord 2 5G using a MediaTek chipset has been slightly mixed, with some questioning why the company is no longer partnered with Qualcomm. Others, like Twitter user @Aakarsh126, are excited about the possibilities, saying “Let’s see what happens with MediaTek processors… I sure do hope it goes well. If it has 3-4 years of software updates (till Android 15-16 if released in Android 12 era), I think it’s going to be pretty good.”
