The change comes as mobile carriers switch from 2G and 3G connections to 4G and 5G technology. The email explains that specific Kindle devices still will work with Wi-Fi only and that even older devices won’t be able to connect to the internet at all, so users would have to download books via a USB cable.

The Verge reports that the third-generation Kindle Keyboard, the fourth-generation Kindle Touch, Kindle Paperwhite (fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh generation), the seventh-generation Kindle Voyage, and the eighth-generation Kindle Oasis will only be able to download new books when connected to a local Wi-Fi network.

The much older Kindle devices that won’t be able to download via Wi-Fi at all include the Kindle (1st and 2nd generation) and the second-generation Kindle DX.
