Alongside the modernization of the app icons, Microsoft is also introducing new filetype icons for its Office applications. (Filetype are those files supported by an app, which in this case are the files that can be opened with any of the Office apps.)

Erin Woo, a member of the product design team at Microsoft, uploaded a short video showing the new filetype icons of Office.

As you can see in the video, the new icons are modern and simple, using minimalistic but colorful designs, and it’s easy to determine which application they open by looking at them.

Excited to finally share the newly redesigned filetype icons for Office! They’re simpler, a little ✨cuter✨, and now available in Outlook for iOS (Android – soon!), OneDrive, and more. pic.twitter.com/f0Z70OrIv8

The new filetype icons are slowly rolling out to users, and the iOS version of Outlook is getting them first, with the Android version getting them next. Microsoft also notes that the icons will come to other apps, such as OneDrive, but they will roll out in the future.
