All the subtle and minor updates to Android Oreo is what makes it great. But these changes are often limited to the device you use and the type of user you are. For instance, you can only use the YouTube picture in picture mode or PiP mode if you have YouTube Red subscription. Also, some of the updates will not be available if you do not have Pixel Launcher installed on your device; like the Notification dots or badges as they call it. But the beauty of Android is, there is always a workaround. So here’s how to get Notification Dots on Android Oreo.

Notification Badges is one of the few updates on Oreo that subtly makes your Android experience better. It is an update to the notification system in Android. How it works is basically by displaying an overlapping dot on the icons of the apps with unread messages or notifications. Read more about some of the changes in Android’s notification system here.

First this first – install the Pixel Launcher by Google for free. However, if you do not own a Pixel device, the Store will tell you that your device is incompatible. But, this is not a major problem. You can go through this restriction by sideloading the Pixel Launcher apk. The beauty of Android, right?

Once downloaded, install the app. Make sure you have enabled Unknown Sources. Now, go to Apps & Notifications > Advance > Special App Access > Notification Access and grant Pixel Launcher notification access. If you already have a Pixel Launcher installed, enable Notification Dots. To do so, go to Settings > Apps & Notifications > Notifications and enable Allow notification dots. You can disable badges or dots for specific app If you would like to. To do so, go to Settings > Apps & Notifications > Notification > Tap an app from the list > disable Allow notification dot.
