Today Nokia decided to release worldwide the Lumia Black update for its line of Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices. The new Black update is not just your average rollout to fix bugs and improve the overall system. No, no, this is much more, as WP8 users will get new features and also the new Microsoft’s Windows Phone Update 3 (a.k.a GDR3), which includes rotation lock; custom tones for messages, emails, and reminders; and a new Driving Mode that enables you to be safer on the road by limiting notifications while driving. Furthermore GDR3 also brings multitasking improvements, including a functionality to close apps is also part of the update.
Now let’s dive into Nokia’s specific features for the Lumia line of phones included in the Black update: As I wrote earlier the latest addition is App Folder. This app is currently available for Lumia 1020 and 925 devices and it adds the ability to group apps and settings in the Start screen using a live tile.
Next is Nokia Camera, this app unifies all the Nokia’s photo apps into one really simple app. Related to photos, there is also Refocus which is a feature that allows WP8 users to change focus of a photo after it’s been taken — awesome feature, but it’s limited to selected devices.
Lumia users will also get Glance screen 2.0, a feature that helps you track information, that way you don’t miss any important notification from: Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, games, messages, emails, calendar, and other apps.
The Nokia Lumia Black update is now available worldwide for the following models: 1020, 925, 920, 820, 720, 625, 620, and 520. Keep in mind that the Lumia 1020 and 925 are the first ones to receive the update, for all the other models the Black update will arrive in the coming weeks according to Nokia.
