During an interview by Channel9, Alex Kipman unveils new details about Microsoft’s HoloLens. You probably don’t recognize the name Alex Kipman, but he is the person responsible for the new holographic device HoloLens and at the Build conference, Kipman showed off and talked about the device in more detail.
According to Kipman, HoloLens is just one of many holographic devices that will be using Windows Holographic as the technology isn’t only limited to Microsoft products.
While up until now we knew a various of HoloLens features, “Mixed Reality Capture” was one of the feature we didn’t know it existed. The Mixed Reality Capture is a video feature that allows users to record video and share them with other people. Alex says that the feature aims to create new types of videos, and he hopes that holographic videos can become a new medium of expression.
On this topic, one important detail is the quality of the camera; while he did not share specifics, he said HoloLense does not have a 4K or 2K camera, but we can speculate it is at least a 1080p or 720p.
Of course, Cortana is part of HoloLens and according to Kipman, you can interact with the digital assistant using voice commands, and the speech dictation functionality is the same used on desktops, phones, and Xbox, which sounds accurate considering HoloLens runs Windows 10.
HoloLens also includes the next generation of Kinect, which is far more improved and a lot smaller than the one Microsoft is selling today. This should not be considered as a big news as HoloLens requires the same data processing that Kinect uses to work properly, as such Microsoft is innovating with an existing technology to build the holographic device.
